It never fails. I have a student who works for days on a story, giving up lunch periods, staying after school, never once looking left or right in class or talking to a neighbor. It takes weeks sometimes, weeks of frustrated revisions and peer editing, weeks of furious typing to get the words out. And that’s only the part I can see; there’s no way of knowing how much thought and sweat were spent on the story at home, or how many times student stared at the ceiling instead of sleeping, trying to figure out how to say what needed to be said.

But finally, it’s finished. The story is ready. The writer proudly announces that it is done. And I can’t read it because it looks like this: “Once upon a time…”
